Key Responsibilities
The duties of a teacher are typically divided into instructional, administrative, and extracurricular responsibilities. When a single teacher is tasked with two distinct subjects like Music and Physical Education (PE), their role becomes incredibly broad, encompassing the development of both the artistic and physical well-being of the students.
Here is a breakdown of the core duties for a Music & PE Teacher:
Music Teacher Duties
1. Instructional and Curriculum Development
Lesson Planning: Design and implement a balanced Music curriculum (covering theory, history, and practice) appropriate for the students' age and curriculum standards (e.g., national, IB, Cambridge).
Practical Instruction: Teach fundamental skills in vocal music (choral/singing) and instrumental music (e.g., recorder, percussion, keyboard, or other available instruments).
Music Theory: Introduce students to elements of music, including rhythm, melody, harmony, and notation.
Assessment: Evaluate students' musical progress, skill mastery, and understanding of musical concepts.
2. Extracurricular and Performance Leadership
Ensemble Direction: Organize, rehearse, and lead school choirs, bands, orchestras, or musical ensembles.
Performance Coordination: Plan and execute school concerts, recitals, plays, cultural events, and ceremonies that feature student musical talent.
Promotion: Foster a love and appreciation for music across the student body and school community.
3. Resource Management
Maintain, inventory, and ensure the proper care and maintenance of all musical instruments, equipment, and sheet music.
Physical Education (PE) Teacher Duties
1. Instructional and Curriculum Development
Skill Development: Teach motor skills, movement patterns, and strategies necessary to perform a variety of physical activities and sports (e.g., team sports, individual sports, gymnastics, dance).
Health and Fitness Education: Instruct students on the principles of physical fitness, health, nutrition, and the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle.
Lesson Delivery: Provide maximum physical activity time within class periods using creative and inclusive teaching methodologies.
Safety: Establish and enforce rules of conduct and safety procedures for all activities, supervising students in the gym, on the field, or in other physical activity areas.
2. Extracurricular and Sports Leadership
Sports Coaching: Organize, coach, and manage school sports teams (intramural and/or extramural) which often requires after-school or weekend commitments.
Event Organization: Plan and coordinate school-wide physical activity events such as sports days, fun runs, or fitness challenges.
3. Resource and Environment Management
Prepare the gym/field/facility area before and after classes, and set up and put away all sports equipment.
Maintain and inventory sports equipment and teaching aids.
Collaboration: Work with other teachers to plan interdisciplinary activities and school events.
Parent Communication: Communicate student progress, achievements, and behavioral issues with parents/guardians.
Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development in both Music and PE to stay current with best practices and curriculum standards (especially important for IB/Cambridge schools).
Administrative: Attend staff meetings, complete administrative paperwork, supervise students outside of class (e.g., during break duty), and fulfill committee responsibilities.
Safeguarding: Ensure the safety and well-being of all students at all times, adhering to school safeguarding policies.
